What AI Search actually means for your small business
The way people search for things has changed
More and more, people are heading to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI overviews before (or instead of) typing something into Google and scrolling through a page of results.
They're not looking for ten blue links to sift through. They're asking a question and expecting a direct, considered answer. Who's good at this? What should I know before I hire someone? What's the difference between X and Y?
And this is where most of the noise comes from. Some marketers saw this shift and did what (some shitty) marketers do: declared the old thing dead and started selling the new thing. If you've been on the receiving end of that noise, I wrote about why it's largely BS right here: Is SEO Dead? The truth about SEO and AI Search for small businesses.
But once you've got past the panic, it's worth understanding what's genuinely changed — and more importantly, what it means for your business.
People are using AI to think and shortlist. Then the come to you to buy
Think about how you use AI tools yourself. When you ask ChatGPT or Claude something, you're usually not ready to buy right then and there. You're in research mode. Figuring out your options, comparing approaches, getting your head around something before you make a decision.
Your potential clients are doing exactly the same thing. They're asking AI to help them think — and then heading to Google, to your website, to your Instagram, to verify what they've found and decide whether you're the right fit.
Which means by the time someone lands on your website via an AI recommendation, they've already done a chunk of the comparison shopping. They know roughly what they're looking for. They're warmer than almost any other lead you'll get.
If ChatGPT or Claude don’t know you exist, neither do the people ask it for recommendations
AI tools recommend businesses by drawing on everything they know about them. Your website, yes — but also what's been written about you across the web. How consistently your name and expertise shows up across multiple places. Whether other trusted sources reference, quote or link to you.
Your website is where AI goes to verify you. Someone asks ChatGPT or Claude for a recommendation. ChatGPT or Claude suggests a few options. The person Googles your name to check you out. They land on your website. If it's clear, credible and answers their questions? You're in. If it's vague, confusing or hasn't been touched since 2021? You've lost them — even though AI put you in the room.
Getting visible on AI search and converting once people land on your site are two different jobs. Both matter. I cover the practical side of how to set your website up for both in detail here: How to get your website found on Google and AI Search.
Traditional search has often felt like a bit of an uphill battle for small businesses
The big players with big budgets and established domain authority have dominated page one for years. Competing for the same keywords as a national brand or a directory site with thousands of pages of content? It's a tough ask. Although — I very much argue, not an impossible ask. SEO is easier than most SEO-bros make it out to be.
But AI search doesn't work the same way. It's not ranking a whole website — it's pulling specific, useful chunks of information from wherever it finds them. A small business with a well-structured, clearly written, genuinely helpful website can show up in an AI response even if it's never cracked page one of Google.
And that’s pretty dang neat.
The businesses that will do well at AI search aren't necessarily the biggest or the ones with the most content. They're the ones that are clearest about what they do, most consistent about showing up across the wider web and most genuinely useful to the people they're trying to reach.
AI Search isn’t a reason to have a full-blown menty-b
But it is a reason to make sure your foundations are solid — your website is clear, your content is helpful, your name shows up in the right places and when someone lands on your site because AI put you on their radar, your website does what’s it’s meant to do.
